Magazine Design

  1. The design created by my partner and me captured the essence of Zendaya: a strong, bold, character, popping against a more common background. It also represented the magazine for which it was printed, Elle Magazine, by making it simplistic in terms of photography and more text based, and very high quality and high taste.

  2. Our magazine incorporates the corporate identity by showing its simplicity while also showcasing its taste for finer font choices and higher quality pictures. Unlike tabloid magazines, it is not all colorful and not all photography based. I incorporated the use of one side of the double page spread dedicated to a main image, much like many of the double page spreads for other main cover lines. I also utilized a 2 column spread on the right side, as I have seen with other magazines in print for Elle.

  3. It made the transition from the ideas in my mind to the finished piece easier as well as making it easier to visualize what I was thinking of and allowed me to be able to compare with what was in my head to an actual magazine design, which was more convenient and less work than setting it all up in illustrator in one shot.

  4. I enjoyed working with a partner, and felt as though the outside opinions were necessary, since I am not always able to step back from my work and critique it with a critical sense in the way that my partner was. It was difficult at first due to our conflicting ideas of what represents ‘Zendaya’, however, we arrived at the same conclusion with little problems in the end.

  5. If I were to take on the task on my own, I believe that the exterior of the magazine would have different font choice with more cover lines in different sizes and thicknesses in strokes, much like is seen in real Elle magazines.

  6. The ideal co-worker collaborates with my ideas with ease, yet allows me to realize faults in my design process and points them out in a constructive way. Additionally, he or she would be able to openly disagree with ideas I may have, yet respectfully be able to come to a conclusion that satisfies both of our creative outlooks.
